Welcome to KOHC’s Discussion Format

I’m Doctor Noel Kerin, and this is my small spot on the web to express opinions, organize observations and, very possibly, vent on issues surrounding occupational, environmental and ergonomic medicine.

Our inaugural topic is one of my hot buttons – the miracle mineral fiber: asbestos.

Is asbestos shingle siding on a cottage dangerous?

Posted by: A Senna at August 16, 2005 08:48 PM

Yes - asbestos in any form if it disturbed is potentially dangerous. Shingles that are cut or caused to give off a dust can be harmful.
Disposal is the biggest challenge and the workers removing the shingles should wear proper personal protection and be trained in it's use. Disposal is another problem as some dumps will not accept asbestos containing material.

What qualifications do you have? Are you a medical doctor? If asbestos causes lung cancer, why are you touching that man's back? You can't "touch" cancer.

I do not have a question, but I wonder how many people recognize the lasting impact of asbestos.

Posted by: S Johnston at February 18, 2006 06:02 PM

Yes, I am a medical doctor with special training in occupational medicine.

I touch the person's back with the face of the stethoscope to listen for abnormal breath sounds which are sometimes found in the presence of lung diseases. Touching a person with cancer does not pose a health risk to the examining doctor.

Not enough as you can see from my blog - this is a lethal dust and the human disease burden will last into the early 2020ies.

The upcoming OEMAC TO. conference will have Professor Arthur Frank MD. (world authority) speaking on the subject please go to: OEMAC.org for more info.

I am making a movie about healthcare in Peterborough, and I would like to address the asbestos issue.

what effect would drinking milk have on the bodies of people who were working with asbestos on a daily basis?

Posted by: Bernadine Bennett at May 13, 2006 09:30 PM

Likely none - here is no scientific evidence that milk neutralises the harmful effects of asbestos on the body.
